Inspiring Captain Story of the Month

A whole room full of great Democratic activists give up their Saturday this March to get trained on the latest grassroots programs. Here they are joining up to be precinct captains after a fun session with our own Grassroots Champion Coalition member Jake Edmondson showing off our latest and greatest offerings for voter registration data tools and precinct captain services.

     - way to go & thanks Jake

Twelve-year-old Bert, a new Precinct Captain on California's Central Coast, enlisted his dad's help in the May 13 Neighbor-to-Neighbor canvass. Bert wants to try the follow-up computer work himself, entering all of his neighbors' preferences among the 6 Democratic Vision statements into the Grassroots Champions Coalition voter database for his county. If you encountered this face at your door, would you have the courage to face him a second time if you failed to vote on election day? Go Bert!

"Congratulations to Bert, he is the picture of success thanks to you and the wonderful Precinct Captain Program. We are all very proud of you! Keep the great work and we can change our state and nation for the better!"
          - Art Torres, Chairman, California Democratic Party

"This is a fantastic story!! Thank you for your support."
          - Artie Blanco, Southwest Political Director, Democratic National Committee

Bruce Daniels, board member of Grassroots Champions Coalition, joins with a local Precinct Captains Club to register new Democrats and spread the Democratic Vision on National Neighbor-to-Neighbor Day. Go team!   Ellen Murtha, Santa Cruz City Precinct Captains Lead, prepares to meet the UCSC College Democrats at a local bakery the morning of May 13, Democratic Vision Day. "Always feed 'em first!" is Ellen's advice to canvass organizers.

Jeanie Wallace and her family prepare to canvass their Hollister neighborhood with Democratic Vision doorhangers. Jeanie's t-shirt says, "If you think education is expensive, you should try IGNORANCE!" Her son wants to emphasize that you don't necessarily have to walk to canvass a neighborhood with your mom.

Jeanie is Chair of the San Benito County Democratic Central Committee, a teacher and CFT Staff Representative, a new Precinct Captain, a wife and a mom. People always ask Jeanie how she does all that work for our Party in addition to her family commitments. Her response is always, "I do everything because of my family commitments." Whether she's speaking with a microphone at a big event or just chatting with neighbors, what carries her message is Jeanie's sincere belief that the Democratic Vision is about her kids.

All Democrats are welcome to attend the San Benito Central Committee meetings, the 2nd Thursday of every month, at the San Benito Library (5th near San Benito Ave.), 5:00-6:00 pm.

CDP Regional Director and Grassroots Champions Coalition member Barbara Graves organized National Neigbor-to-Neighbor Day in Region 9. Before she walked her own precinct in Capitola, she gained visibility handing out literature on a street corner.

<Mural picture> Democratic Precinct Captain Pat Emard is building bridges through community projects. The local newspaper reported on her project:

"Artists are doing their part to stamp out graffiti while adding color to the community. A group of about 20 students from Kimberly Hardin's Art Studio used a wall on the north side of Highway 1, on Soquel Drive between Rio del Mar and Freedom boulevards, as their canvas and spent two weekends painting it. The finished mural, 10-by-260 feet, was transformed from a dull wall to a bright depiction of all things Aptos - from the ocean to the redwoods to the cliffs. The new and improved wall is being hailed as 'The Great Wall of Aptos'."
